Summer Program 2005 in China

Welcome to Summer Program 2005 in China

Host: Global TEFL Network, Zhejiang University (6th year)

Location: Zhejiang, China (with a large camp located in Hangzhou No 2 High School in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang (the Map of Zhejiang), which is famous for its beautiful West Lake Sceneries, and other camps, such as Taizhou camp, Wenzhou camp, Ningbo camp, Jinhua Camp, Quzhou camp, Huzhou camp, Zhuji camp, Jiaxing camp, Shaoxing camp and Yiwu camp, etc.).

Programs (selective):
A: From July 11 to July 31 (3-week program)
B: From August 1 to August 21 (3-week program)
C: From July 11 to August 7 (4-week program)

Class and Activity Time:

8:00--11:30 am for morning session
2:00--5:30 pm for afternoon session

Course: Spoken English, Conversation, Teaching Methodology on English Language

Class Size: 25-30 persons a class

Participants: Middle school students aged from 13-18 or middle school English teachers aged 25-35.

Goals:
To improve the listening and speaking ability of students or the teaching skills and methodology of teachers. The program has been operating for five years and the intent is to provide a "summer camp" opportunity rather than an academic emphasis.

Workload: 6-7 hours a day and 5-6 days a week with Sundays off and one or two free tour of the local city or towns for each program. The emphasis appears to be to have fun while being immersed in English as the communication tool. One teacher will be in charge of one or two different classes. For some classes a Chinese English teacher may be provided as an assistant, who can relieve some of the workload. Teachers can divide the classes into oral English, listening, free reading, video showing, slide showing, students performance, singing, playing games, party, speech, English corner and other non-academic settings, etc. Although it seems the teachers have a lot of periods, yet if arranged properly, they will not feel so and they will have a lot of fun with the students. Classes can also be held outside the classroom. Current and former list memebers have taught in this setting and indicate that it is fun and much can be enjoyed while using English.

Lesson Plan: Teachers may find and bring to China some material for training the oral English of students or the teaching methodology of Chinese English teachers. They are free to conduct and organize their classes. Usually every class lasts 45-50 minutes with 5-10 minutes for break. Teachers should also prepare some English games, songs and activities in the classroom.

Teaching Material:
Foreign teachers are required to bring some original materials and get them copied during the program (free). They are free to use their own material and teaching methods although some of the camps will provide some ready-made books for the students. Copies will be limited to a certain amount.

Teaching Facilities: Some of the classrooms have air conditioner, while some only have electric fans. All classrooms have tape recorder. Many camps have TV set and projectors. Many schools have computers and copy machine.

Hotels: As the camps are rotated in a few different cities and this is a short-term summer camp so the teachers are usually staying in off-campus hotels, which are usually near the camp for each program. The organizer is only paying for the basic room service, not including the extra service like food, drink, laundry, message, IDD call and Cable Internet, etc. The teachers usually shared hotel room during each program, including one or two days before and after the program. The hotel room has two beds, air-conditioner, local telephone, and 24-hour hot showers. Check sample hotel for reference.

Meals: Usually the organizer will provide three free meals for the students and teachers in the camp cafeteria for each program, including one or two days before and after the program. However if the school has no free meal to provide, foreign teachers can eat outside on their own account during the whole program. Instead, they can get some meal stipend of Rmb950 yuan for program A and program B, or Rmb1250 yuan for program C. All the meal money is paid from the first day classes begin.

Food: Nowdays in China you will find all kinds of international chain-stores and can get many things you want for food in supermarkets and local shops. You know China has become a world market.

Tour: Usually the organizer will arrange one or two-day free local tour for foreign teachers during each program. The staff and students will also show them around the city and local sceneries during other times. Chinese cities, towns and villages are very specific and attractive.

Internet: Usually some of the camps have campus computer rooms with Internet connection, where the teachers can use freely. However, if there are no such computer rooms, the teachers can only use the nearby Internet Bar on their own account. It is very cheap with only one or two RMB yuan an hour.

Transportation: The teachers are responsible for their own International and domestical airfare and other transportation to and from Hangzhou. Recommended routes are from foreign countries to Shanghai Pudong International Airport and then from Shanghai to Hangzhou.

Insurance: The teachers are responsible for their own travel and medical insurance during the program.

Salary (selective):
Program A: Rmb5000 plus selective Rmb950 for meals
Program B: Rmb5000 plus selective Rmb950 for meals
Program C: Rmb6500 plus selective Rmb1250 for meals
